Janet Marie Harty

Janet Harty was named the Head Coach of YNS in the Fall of 2015 and brings with her many years of coaching experience from the Greenwood Memorial Swim Club in Gardner, MA where she began as the Assistant Age Group Coach and Program Director and for the most recent 3 years served as the Head Coach and Team Manager.  

Janet has coached swimmers of all ages starting with lessons and moving up through the age groups to very high level competitive swimming. In her tenure at Greenwood Memorial Swim Club, Janet led swimmers to a wide range of national and international competitions including the 4th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and the 18 & Under World Cup held in Tokyo, Japan and Beijing, China. She has coached swimmers named to USA Swimming National Junior teams in 2014 and 2015 and served as an assistant coach at the 2014 USA Swimming National Junior team training camp held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. 

Janet, her husband Phil and their children live in Beverly.  Janet's oldest son, Brandon, is a junior student/athlete runner at UMass Lowell, her son Ryan is a freshman student/athlete swimmer at the University of Texas and her daughter, Kaitlin, is a senior in high school and a swimmer with the team.  They also have a Weimaraner named Hayley.

Alessandro Eramo

Alessandro joined the full time YNS staff in the fall of 2015 as the Lead Age Group Coach, overseeing the development and progress of over 200 athletes under the age of 12. Alessandro primarily coaches Age Groups 1, 2, and 3 at the Beverly location in addition to assisting the Senior Group. Prior to 2015 Alessandro was the lead site coach of the Haverhill site and has assisted in multiple other roles at the Beverly site since 2011. Before coaching, Alessandro swam for YNS from 2003-2013. Alessandro graduated from Merrimack College in 2015 with a B.A. in Human Development.

Jan Scott Boland

Jan has coached with YNS for over 10 years, primarily with the Senior group. She has coached all levels of the YNS team. Jan is an ASCA Level 2 Coach and has completed the Physiology School Certification for ASCA Level 3. Jan has participated in many ASCA Clinics over the years.

Jan is a life long YMCA swimmer and swam in college for the Wittenberg University Women’s Swim Team.  Jan and her husband, Jim, are active members of the Masters Swim Team.  She consistently places in the Top 20 for her age group in the US.  Jan has also competed in triathlons and duathlons in the USA and New Zealand, placing first woman overall in a number of races.  She was ranked 25th in the USA in her age group and named an honorary member of the New Zealand World Championship Triathlon Team in 1991.

Jan has her B.A. in Psychology from Wittenberg University.  She also holds a Masters in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University.  Jan worked in Human Resources for over 10 years for Fortune 500 Companies and as a consultant.  Jan has two daughters who competed for the Sharks.  Her younger daughter also competed for the YMCA Wildcats gymnastics team.

Carly Bari

Carly has been coaching with YNS since 2011, first at the Ipswich site and now at the Beverly site, and has coached all levels of the YNS team.  Prior to coaching with the Sharks, she coached with clubs in North Carolina and Minnesota.  Carly is very passionate about swimming and loves working to help young people become better athletes.  She has been swimming competitively since she was 6 years old.  Her swimming career culminated at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and now she continues to swim with the Sharks' Masters group.

Carla Dropo

Carla has been coaching with YNS since 2008, working first with the Age Group swimmers and now with the Junior group.  As a nationally ranked college swimmer, she swam for the University of Connecticut specializing in the 400 IM and the 200 Breaststroke.  She is extremely proud of her two daughters, Sarah and Nicole Welch, who have qualified for Junior National and YMCA National competitions.  Carla joins her fellow YNS coaches as a passionate and active member of the YNS Masters swim team and also competes as an indoor rower.

Julie has been a swim instructor since 1984 as well as coaching for YNS. Julie graduated from Endicott College with an Associates Degree in Art in 1976. She has been an Aquatics Director of the Beverly YMCA. Julie currently works at the Danvers Bank. Her daughter, Robyn, swam for the YNS Sharks and now is a member of the Keene State Swimming Team. Julie is ASCA Level 3 Coach.

Marblehead (LVO) Site


Susan Shea Guertin

LVO Co-Lead Coach

Susan is in her 37th year as a lead site coach of the Marblehead Group. She is also in her 30th year as the Head Coach of the Marblehead High School swim team. Susan has an impressive record with both the high school and YMCA  teams. Her high school team was runner-up at the 1998 girls N. Sectional championships, placed third at the State Championships that year. Placed third in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Marblehead has won 18 plus Northeast Conference Meet titles. In 2011, her girls won the Division II State Championship with only 7 girls.  This was the highlight of her high school swimming career. 

 

Susan is in her 47th  year teaching at the YMCA; 23 of those years she was also the Aquatic Director.  She has won two Eastern Mass YMCA District Division II titles and an overall girl’s team championship in 1992.  In 1990, the Marblehead 9 & 10 Girls won the YMCA New England Championship. In 1995, Susan had a group of nine swimmers qualify for the LC National Championships (her first qualifiers). She has had two swimmers qualify for the SC Nationals and 21 for the LC Nationals as well as four All-American. Susan graduated from Salem State College in 1992 Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Aquatic Management and Biology. She is a Level 3 ASCA recognized coach. Susan holds a top 10 time as a swimmer in the 100 Back and 1650 Free for NE Master's Swimming. She also set the record, for her age group, in the 200m Backstroke at the Bay State Summer Games in 2006 and came in second in 2007. 

 
Susan is married to Paul Guertin for 49 years who was instrumental in helping raise money and build the new Lynch/vanOtterloo YMCA as a board member for over 20 years.  She has three daughters Tara who was a diver (Photo Editor for AFAR,  San Francisco), twins: Erin, diver and swimmer and National qualifier (Caterer in Jackson Hole), Colleen diver and swimmer and National qualifier (teacher in Marblehead).  One grandson, Elliott.

Jenny Ross Luker

Jenny joined the YNS staff in 2008 as director of dryland training for the Junior and Senior groups and is currently the LvO Co-Site Coordinator for the Junior and Senior YNS swimmers. She has been involved in swimming for more than 30 years. As a college athlete, she was conference champion and record holder for the Kenyon College swim team, who currently has 23 NCAA Division III National Championships.  Kenyon can proudly boast that no other women's program, in any sport or any division in NCAA history has every held as many titles.  

 

As a master swimmer, she is a national champion, USMS All American and world record relay titleholder. Bob Seltzer, Jenny's husband, has been a Meet Referee for over 15 years.  Her step-daughter Danielle Seltzer was a 2009 NCAA All American swimmer and her son Charlie, a YNS alum, is a freshman at Amherst College, where he is a member of the swim team. Jenny is an ASCA Level 2 certified coach.

Andy Jones

Andy Jones is a graduate of Cambridge University and Harvard Business School.  He was the captain and swim coach of Cambridge University Swimming and Waterpolo Club during its Centenary Varsity Match year when Cambridge beat Oxford in all competitions (by record margins in the swimming) in addition to placing 3rd in the British University Swimming Association team championships and fielding several finalists and podium finishers in both the long and short course British Student Championships.  Despite the University not having its own pool!  Prior to University swimming, Andy competed regionally and nationally for his high school and local swim club.  More recently, Andy has successfuly completed both the 8 mile Boston Light Swim and the 10 mile Kingdom Swim without wetsuits and he is currently training, along with a fellow YNS Masters swimmer, for a solo attempt on the English Channel in August 2017.

A life long swimmer, former UK swimming teacher and YNS Masters member since 2006 he has recently taken up coaching the LVO's Senior Team seeking to give something back to the sport he has enjoyed for so long and for the challenge it involves.

Andy, his wife Jacqui, and their two sons Harry (5) and Toby (7) have lived in Swampscott since 2006.  An active family, they enjoy taking open water swimming vacations together.

Zach Beal

A swimmer since he was 6 months old, Zach has been in and around the pool all his life, with a career beginning in swim lessons at the original Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA with Sue Guertin and closing as captain of a collegiate team. While at MHS, Zach swam under Coach Sue Guertin on the Varsity Swim team for four years, and served as captain of the team during his Senior year season. During his Senior year, Zach swam at both the MIAA Sectional Meet and qualified and competed at the State Championship meet. 
 
After high school, Zach went on to study at Norwich University in Vermont. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Norwich in May 2015 with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice Studies and a minor in Psychology. Zach was a member of the swim team at Norwich, and was voted in as captain of the team going into his Junior year season, actively contributing to the team winning the GNAC Invitational meet three years in a row, and placing 4th, 3rd, and 3rd overall at the NEISDA New England Championship meets. At Norwich, Zach spent two years specializing in sprinting freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly, and ended his Norwich swim career as a distance racer, specializing in the 1000 freestyle. In addition to being a member of the swim team, Zach served as Co-Chairperson of the University Honor Committee, Academic Mentor, and was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. 

Jen Brehob

As a Bronze and Age Group coach, Jen gained experienced first teaching group lessons since 1999 and the Bronze Group since 2004 where she learned first hand from Coach Susan Guertin.  She is an Assistant Coach at Marblehead High School, USMS Certified Coach Level 3, and ASCA Level 2 coach.  Jen's strengths as a Masters Coach at YNS derive from being an intermediate swimmer herself.  She is a great promoter of the sport and encourages everyone to try it because she believes it is one of the best ways to help you reach your goals and live your best life.  

Jen graduated from Marblehead High School, class of '76, received her Batchelors Degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and received her Masters from the University of Texas at Austin.  She led an excavation of the first of twelve tombs discovered in an old olive grove/new lettuce patch which turned out to be the ancient Necropolis of Matapontion/Metapontum in Southern Italy. Jen has three children, a daughter who is a Senior at Rice University this year, and twins (son and daughter) who are Seniors at Marblehed High School this year.

Emily Katz

Emily began coaching at YNS in 2015.  Previously, she coached at the LS JCC in Newton for two years.  Emily swam for the Cape Cod Swim Club from the age of 5 through high school, and then swam for William Smith College, where she earned a B.S. in Environmental Science.  Emily also holds two masters degrees in education, and teaches Pre Kindergarten for Boston Public Schools.

Heather is entering her second coaching season with YNS, first year as Lead Site Coach in Haverhill. She began swimming competitively for the YMCA at the age of 7, left the sport to pursue other interests, and returned to swim during her undergrad for UMASS Dartmouth Division 3. Heather has a MS in Marine Biology from UMASS Dartmouth and is a published Fisheries Biologist. She enjoys open water swimming and distance running. Heather is a full time potter and resides in Haverhill, MA with her husband and 2 sons, the oldest, Joshua, swim for YNS.

Carol Marie Yunker

Carol swam for YWCA league, AAU, and summer club specializing in sprints and butterfly. She swam for one year at Kent State College. She is originally from New Jersey and relocated to Massachusetts. In 2001, she joined the ANA Masters Team where she still swims and competes.

Her coaching career began in 1970 primarily as a diving instructor and then as a swim coach of a team that produced two national champions in 1979. Carol is an ASCA Level 1 and currently coaches swimming at Lowell and Haverhill High Schools, as well as the dive team at Lowell. She loves working with swimmers of all ages as it always teaches her something new.

She is married with three boys, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Family has always been important to her and she enjoys spending as much time with them as possible. Carol’s interests include singing in a chorus and bowling once a week.

Beth Lott has 12 years of experience teaching swimming and coaching swimmers of all levels of the YNS team. Beth has been the  Aquatics Director at the Manchester Athletic Club since 1999. Her athletic experience includes running marathons and open water swims. Beth is a graduate of Roanoke College with a degree in Business. She has three sons. Graham swam for the YNS Sharks and now is swimming distance at Keene State.  Beth is an ASCA Level 2 Coach.
